David P. Mastin

David P. Mastin, born 7/21/53 entered into everlasting life 6/17/22 in the early morning hours while in hospice care at The Emeralds in Grand Rapids, MN. At 68 years young our beloved ‘Uncle Dave’ made his final departure from this world as we know it. A life filled with trials and triumphs, travels and adventures, and his final days becoming family to those who call Big Falls home. Although born in Arcata, CA, he and his brothers grew up in Int’l Falls, MN. Prior to settling in Big Falls, Dave enjoyed living in other beautiful states such as New Mexico and Oregon. Most knew Dave for his talent in the arts; painting beautiful scenery, carving amazing wood sculptures, creating stunning tapestries, designing wonderful jewelry plus so much more. His art talents were endless. Dave is now rejoined with his parents, Obie and Doris Mastin, and his older brothers Dennis ‘Gino’ and John C. Mastin, all whom he loved and missed. He and John had a bet about who would be last, perhaps that $10 has been paid in full now. He leaves behind many family and friends. Closest to him, his nephew Garrett Mastin, who holds many memories of learning uncle Dave’s spaghetti recipes and taking in many airings of MN Viking football games and hunting together. In addition his other nephews Richard and John L Mastin and nieces Jennifer Tessen (Mastin), Angi Raukohl (Mastin), Jina Huth (Mastin), Brenda Brackin, Jodi Cook (Mastin), sister-in-law Carolyn Mastin Canaday, plus several cousins and great nephews and nieces. Also, his two adult children formerly from International Falls, MN. His son Adam Mastin and children Walker and Harley currently in Oregon and his daughter Crystal Mastin Brown and her children Austin, Elijah, Alex and Elisa in Arizona. And certainly not least he also leaves behind many friends who’ve become like family to him; Nita Peterson, Brett Ripley, Rahn Hill, Jeff Johnson and others. To those of us he leaves behind, we’ll forever remember Dave as ‘funky unky’ earning that name from his nephew John because at a young age he thought uncle Dave ‘looked pretty cool with his fro and bell bottoms’. We also remember him as ‘the family Richard Prior’ earning that name from his great skill at making us laugh with excellent jokes and stories until we wet our pants. An estate sale / friends and family get together will be held on Sunday, July 3rd from 10am-2pm at “Dave’s Place” 6861 Cnty Hwy 31, Big Falls, MN followed by drinks, remembrance and celebration of life at the Big Falls Municipal Liquor Store. All those who would like to attend are welcome. Family would love to know your favorite story (stories) with or about Dave. Please feel free to include them if giving a card, thank you very much for your condolences and sharings.
