Whew! It is already the middle of July. Not quite sure how the days are speeding by so quickly, but I try and encourage everyone else to try as well to spend a few minutes each day just appreciating where I (you) am and notice something beautiful. Then I pick up a book and read to slow down and recognize that humans can’t be on the run all the time.

Mrs. Ham: Resilient; bull-hide tuff, too

I’ve ruminated about Mrs. Ham since I read about her 30 years ago. Mrs. Ham lived in Fairland, Minn., an isolated hamlet in Northwest Koochiching County. It would be a long walk from Baudette: make sure you go left when you get to the Fiero Truck Trail because it’s a long way to Big Falls. From International Falls, it’s 20 miles to Loman and then west on The Black River Road. Originally it was named Feldman for one of its first settlers but later referred to as Fairland where a Post Office was located until 1936. There were so many folks and commerce in the Fairland area at one time that some sketchy historical accounts claim there was consideration given to Fairland when the Koochiching County seat was established.

NEARLY NORTH OF TWO: CAPITOL COMMOTION II (D)

Our House of Representatives’ Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on our nation’s capitol held its 6th public hearing in unscheduled and surprising fashion this past week on June 28, 2022. Congress was in recess for the July 4th holiday and the young lady witness was former top aide to ex-president’s chief of staff. Focus of attention was internal White House activity for several days leading up to the attack on the capitol. Witness’s testimony supplemented her four previously private interviews of some 20 hours.
