In the predawn hours when most of us are asleep, nature is busy assembling stars and planets for a late summer spectacle.Early birds who go out at least an hour before sunrise will see Mars, somewhat low in the east, and Jupiter, lower but brighter, in the northeast.

Time for trolling, casting

Rainy Lake water levels have dropped 8-12 inches this past week and with water temperatures soaring over 70 degrees, it won’t be long until the big lake reefs start holding walleye.Before you head for deep water, you need to spend some time trolling and casting weed edges and around weed patches that can be found throughout the Rainy Lake system.

‘Take a Kid Fishing’ Weekend

During Take a Kid Fishing Weekend Friday, June 7, to Sunday, June 9, Minnesota residents can fish without licenses if they take children 15 or younger fishing — and fishing is one way among many to enjoy Great Outdoors Month in June.“Fishing is fun and it’s a great way to spend time outdoors together with kids,” said Benji Kohn, volunteer mentor program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
