The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is encouraging homeowners to remove birdfeeders now and check their property for food sources that could attract bears.While most of the female bears with cubs and yearlings are still near their denning areas, the mild winter has caused some full-grown bears to emerge from dens early to look around or find a quick, high-calorie snack.“Bird feeders can become bear feeders,” said Andrew Tri, DNR bear project leader.

Ice go-round

Donn Fuller, of Point o Pines, built a 60-foot ice carousel on Rainy Lake March 10.Those who helped report “It was loads of fun.”A picnic, complete with a fire, was held on the rotating disk of ice.The Pontoon Crew, a group of friends who gather during the summer, celebrated the feat upon its completion.An ice carousel is a man-made ice circle, made in nature when cooler water comes in contact with warmer current.

Levels based on drought concerns

Water levels for Rainy Lake will target the top quarter of the rule curve as of March 24.The International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board Water Levels Committee announced this week the spring regulation plan, which will be put into effect March 24.The plan calls for the target water levels for Rainy Lake at the top quarter of the rule curve, or 75-100 percent of the rule curve band.
