March always brings passages—winter to spring, ice to slush, sun to the Northern Hemisphere. This year, the month begins with an uncommon passage as the two brightest planets sweep by each other above the southwest horizon.
District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) spent time monitoring fishing activity at the annual Rainy Lake Sportfishing Club Family Fishing Derby. Small amounts of recent snowfall have helped keep local snowmobile trails in excellent shape. People are reminded that when the time comes for fish shelter removal from area lakes, debris and litter should also be taken.
Voyageurs National Park’s Law Enforcement staff and the Polar Polers Ski Club have teamed up to offer a variety of ski events the weekend of Feb. 24-26.
Scholarships, habitat projects and more are funded when a ticket is purchased for the Rainy Lake Sportfishing Club’s 38th Annual Ice Fishing Derby and raffle, scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Saturday on Rainy Lake’s Sandbay.

District 5 - Eveleth area Feb. 13 CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports time was spent at Camp Ripley for the Enforcement Division?s annual awards and training program. The weekend was spent monitoring a variety of outdoor activities, including snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing, shed hunting, and walking as the warm weather brought out lots of people. Enforcement action was taken for snowmobile and ATV registration issues, but overall compliance was good.
District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Curtis Simonson (International Falls #2) reports spending time this past week patrolling area snowmobile trails and checking anglers on area lakes. Anglers reported having some success and snowmobile riders were enjoying the trail conditions. Enforcement action was taken for multiple snowmobile- registration violations.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has created a new online tool, called the Watershed Health Assessment Framework for Lakes, or WHAF for Lakes, providing easy access to water quality and health information for thousands of Minnesota lakes.
Keith Aili was a happy man at the finish of the 39th running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Jan. 31.
