The new year opens with Venus climbing out of the sun’s afterglow. On Sunday, January 22, Saturn drops past Venus as Earth’s orbital motion sends the ringed planet tumbling into the sunset. Look for the pair of planets very low in the southwest just as the sky darkens.
Dec. 19 CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports time was spent on Lake of the Woods checking ice fishing activity.

An Open OutDoors for Kids grant from the National Park Foundation will further the reach of the Voyageurs Classroom Initiative. The joint education program connects thousands of young people to Voyageurs National Park and encourages students to recognize their national park as an outdoor classroom, and an inviting space for families to deepen connections with one another.
On the night of December 7-8, Earth finally catches up to Mars in the orbital race. Mars will then be opposite the sun in the sky and so up all night—not to mention gloriously bright.
