I have been educating our readers about the Master Gardener priorities that help choose the projects and work we do in the community. I have covered four of the priorities, horticultural skills, plant biodiversity, local food, and pollinator health. This article will discuss nearby nature and clean water. The Master Gardener volunteer program encourages access to plants and nearby green space while working with community groups. They also encourage equal access to public spaces that benefit the health and well-being of all members of our communities.
Monday CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) and COC Choua Khang spent this week checking traps, monitoring grouse hunters on ATVs, and checking fishing activities along the Rainy River and Rainy Lake. The temperature has dropped this week but the anglers who are still on boats have been successful in bagging their daily limits. Youth have been out enjoying the nice weekend riding ATVs and hunting with their families. Enforcement action was taken for unlawfully transporting game birds, no license in possession, youth ATV operations, and transporting unlawfully taken fish from Canada. CO Curtis Simonson (International Falls #2) reports working the Rainy River and working ATV/small-game activity throughout the area. Enforcement action was taken for allowing illegal operation of an ATV by a juvenile, operating an ATV without a required helmet, and transporting loaded firearms.

Voyageurs National Park staff have begun removing hazard marker and regulatory buoys within the park. Voyageurs National Park reminds visitors that hunting and trapping of any type or manner is prohibited on federal lands and all waters within the boundary of the park.
Feeding and attractant bans are in place across the state to prevent concentrations of wild deer in areas with a higher risk for disease. These bans are precautionary steps the Department of Natural Resources took after deer that tested positive for chronic wasting disease were found both in the wild and on deer farms. Feeding bans encompass wider areas because food sources can concentrate deer and allow for close contact – one of the mechanisms for CWD spread.
The nights are getting longer and darker, but brilliant Jupiter provides a beacon until well into the morning hours. The king of planets comes out in the east at nightfall and dominates the sky. West of Jupiter shines Saturn, and above the ringed planet the Summer Triangle of stars still rides high. A waxing moon passes Saturn between the 4th and 5th and Jupiter between the 7th and 8th.
District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) and COC Choua Khang spent this past week monitoring fishing and boat activity on Rainy Lake and Rainy River. Waterfowl season opened with few birds in the bag as the wild rice in Black Bay and the Rat Root River is minimal to non-existent because of the flooding earlier this year. Weather over the weekend kept a lot of the grouse hunters at home. Enforcement action was taken for license violations, boating safety equipment violations, and transporting loaded firearms.
