There are very few boat tracks on Rainy Lake these days. But don’t let the high water and challenging boat launch conditions keep you from experiencing some of the best days of the season for fishing. Weed patches are now more visible as the lake level drops. Anglers will be able to soon connect with aggressive walleyes and crappies as they move from their spawning locations to deeper summer water.
This is a little late in the season, but there is still time to attract pollinators to your flower and food gardens. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are essential for a thriving garden.
District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Curtis Simonson (International Falls #2) reports spending time this past week working at the Port of Entry in International Falls, patrolling area forest roads for ATV activity, working AIS enforcement and checking anglers on area lakes and rivers. Enforcement action taken this past week consisted of walleye/ northern pike overlimits, transporting fish without skin patches, and failing to remove drain plugs.
June is my favorite gardening month! The peonies are blooming, I’m planting flowers and vegetable seeds and envisioning the fresh vegetables that will grow and the flowers that will bloom. The world is green and colorful where it once was all white. This year, June in northern Minnesota has been sunny with good rain for our gardens. Seeds have germinated and young plants are growing quickly.
July opens with four morning planets—Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn—strung out in that order from northeast to south. By month’s end, Saturn will be moving into the southwest and both Saturn and Jupiter start rising before midnight.
Kevin Peterson returned a phone call last Wednesday morning from a boat. Probably not that unusual for a man who’s spent the better part of the last 45 years with the fisheries division of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
It’s been windy for the better part of a week. The days that were calm, I took advantage of fishing for walleyes and caught them in 17- and 31-foot depths.
