District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports area lakes (Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, Crane, and Sandpoint lakes) are at record-high flood levels and are expected to continue to rise for another week. People are reminded that a “nowake” ordnance is in place within 300 feet of the shore.
June begins with Jupiter sailing away from Mars, moving ever higher and westward above the predawn eastern horizon. About 75 minutes before sunrise, Venus will be quite low in the east.
Due to recent historic high-water levels within the Rainy Lake Watershed, Voyageurs National Park has closed some campsites and cancelled boat tours until June 18. Staff are concerned about visitor safety and availability of various amenities at the park campsites, houseboat sites, and day use sites.

M.T. Stringer has returned after a winter hiatus from the local fishing report. String reports that fishing Kettle River on opening day is one of Rainy Lake’s top fishing couples, Joel Pagnac and Jennifer French in the Ranger. They went head-tohead with Brian “Bro” Brosdahl and his wife, pictured in their Lund in the background. Both boats filled up by 10 a.m. (Word has it that the out of towners filled up first, possibly because they had professional netter Jeff Hamilton in their boat.) Lots of float planes in the air this week. Nothing represents the wilderness more than the sight of a float plane, perhaps on its way to that secret lake to catch big fish and lots of them.
District 5 - Eveleth area Monday CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports fishing opener on Rainy Lake was the slowest in this officer’s career as far as number of anglers checked, mainly attributed to the high-water levels. The catch and release sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River continues to be good.
Voyageurs National Park staff are actively placing hazard markers and other buoys within park boundaries, staff reported Monday. Park staff will make every effort to place buoys in a timely manner for the 2022 summer season but ask boaters to keep in mind they are working with flood conditions.
The Master Gardeners’ plant sale is coming up this weekend! It will be at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds on May 21st, from 9 to noon. It’s been such a beautiful May so far.
