As April opens, the stage is set for some serious planetary action in the morning sky. On April Fools’ Day, Venus, Saturn and Mars sit close to each other above the eastern horizon, almost equally spaced and in that order from left to right.

VNP plans spring cattail burns

Voyageurs National Park staff will burn areas of wetlands to treat areas of invasive hybrid cattails from now through April, weather permitting. Burning will include floating and rooted cattails as well as other wetland areas to remove dead vegetation, rejuvenate wetland plant communities, and reduce woody plant encroachment.

Spring-time ritual

Ben Sunne shot these photos of what appears to be a male sharp-tail grouse performing a courtship dance. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports that each spring, as many as 25 males gather in a grassy area and begin to display.
