Half of the top 10 show in February

All month long, the knot of bright winter constellations occupies center stage in the south during the prime early evening viewing hours. This grouping boasts five stars that rank among the top 10 brightest in the night sky: Sirius (No. 1), Capella (No. 6), Rigel (No. 7), Procyon (No. 8) and Betelgeuse (No. 10).

Input on deer goals sought

Beginning Monday, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is asking for public input on deer population goals in 28 of 130 deer permit areas. “We’re continuing with an online questionnaire this year and adding webinars for those who wish to connect directly with area wildlife managers on this topic,” said Barbara Keller, DNR big game program leader.

CO Reports International Falls

CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports overall outdoor activity has been slow with the cold weather, but continuing snow falls have put the area snowmobile trails in great shape. Good job groomers! Ice fishing bite on Rainy Lake has been slow, typical January.

VNP Trail Report

Things continue to come along nicely, though a bit slower than some might prefer. It took the crew about 4 days to clear blowdown along the Chain of Lakes Trail. They are expecting a lot of blow down along the Black Bay Ski Trails as well. Through their diligence the Chain of Lakes is now open, as is the first loop on the Black Bay Ski Trail.

Former VNP ranger featured in ‘People’ magazine

A former Voyageurs National Park ranger, Mariah Reading, was featured in the Dec. 10 issue of People Magazine for her “eco art.” Entitled, “This Eco Artist Turns Litter Into Landscape Paintings: 'We Can Be Better, More Sustainable Humans',” the Bangor, Maine, native worked as an interpretive ranger this past summer, and also was involved in the Voyageur Classroom Initiative, a partnership between the Voyageurs Conservancy and VNP.

KEDA Board notes

Joanne Smith, Small Business Development Center, reported in December that she’s been receiving applications for the Main Street Economic Revitalization Program, for which the Northland Foundation is expected to anchor through the Department of Employment and Economic Development.
