Evelyn Mae Hultman 90, of International Falls, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at
Good Samaritan Society of Int’l Falls with family by her side.
Evelyn was born on the Orstad family farm in Erhard, MN on May 26, 1931 to Henry and Bernice Orstad, in the same room her
father was born. After she was born, her father went to the meadow and brought back an armful of lilacs; this became her “birth
flower” and it became tradition to plant them at the family homes and lake cabin.
Evie graduated from Falls High School in 1950 and worked as a sales clerk and bookkeeper for the F.W. Woolworth store in Int’l
Falls.
In 1952, she married Kenneth “Buzz” Hultman and moved to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, where Buzz was stationed in the
Air Force.
They returned to International Falls where they would make a lifetime of memories together and raise their children – Jim, Kathy, Pam, and David.
While working on the Orstad/Hultman family history, Evie wrote “We learn a lot from our grandparents and our fathers and
mothers as we grow when we are children. The love, care, hopes. They are always there when we need them, we are never alone. That is what families are about”. She spoke of lessons learned from her mother – how to cook, knit, crochet,
sew, and embroider. From her father – the importance of showing kindness and patience, and the value of
doing a job well.
Evie was incredibly talented and loved learning how to make new things. When she was younger, figure skating was her favorite past time. She would watch girls take lessons at Smokey Bear Park, and then she would return to Carson Lupie skating rink to practice what she saw. She had an eye for creating beautiful and special things, which are treasured by her family and friends.
Her family was the ultimate joy and love of her life, and she was happiest when the family would get together. Spending time at
the family cabin on Grindstone Island, gathering for holidays, or just having family stop by would make Evie light up. She wrote,
“It’s so nice to have such a wonderful family who love each other and can have a great time just being together”.
Evie was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Bernice Orstad; husband, Kenneth “Buzz” Hultman; granddaughter
Jennie Johnson, brothers Kenneth Orstad and Hank Orstad; sister-in-law Alicia Orstad, brother-in-law
John Rapaway.
She is survived by her children Jim (Marie), Kathy Ellsworth, Pam Riggs (Mike Spry), David (Christine); grandchildren Amy (Aaron) Mortenson, Emily (Trent) Nicholson, Bryan (Nikki) Hultman, Breanne (David) Anderson, Carl (Ariel) Hultman, Gary (Ashley) Hultman; great-grandchildren, Reed Hultman, Ethan Mortenson, Ellie and Kelty Nicholson, Bennett and Gannon Anderson, Braiden and Logan Hultman; sisters Vivian Rapaway Demuth, Genevieve Laukka; brother Clifford Orstad; sisters-in-laws, Mary (Dave) Jackson, Doris Tilander, and Mary Orstad.
A memorial service will be conducted at Green-Larsen Mortuary on Monday, October 18, 2021 a1 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in International Falls.
