John P. Pfau, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 76 on Aug. 2, 2021. John was born to John and Zita Pfau on June 29, 1945, in Littlefork, Minnesota. After a small-town upbringing, he attended nearby Bemidji State College, where he earned a BS in English. After graduating, John taught English at Phoenix’s North High School, was later drafted into the US Army and spent four years stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Further education included an MA in Journalism Education from Arizona State University, after which he joined the English department at Tolleson High School and later Glendale Community College, a proud career which spanned over 25 years. He was a great teacher and loved his trades in journalism and English. He deeply loved his tribe and acted as family historian, making home-made movies over the years that are cherished by his family. His dry wit and corny, off-color “Uncle John” jokes are missed already. John is predeceased by his parents; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat Smyth (Guy), Phyllis Boyd (Jimmy Clements), and Kate Swedback (Jim); and his nephew, Steve Smyth. He is survived by 13 nephews and nieces and their spouses, sisters Maxine Thorson (Lowell) and DeDe Welling (Ron), as well as many dear friends. A memorial service is pending. John wished to have his ashes spread over the Grand Canyon.
