Charles Alvin Thompson, Sr.

Charles Alvin Thompson, Sr., 91, of Yuma, AZ passed away peacefully on Friday, October 15, 2021.  Chuck was born March 13, 1930 in International Falls, MN.  He grew up in the Falls and entered the Marine Corps on January 10, 1952, stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. On May 10, 1952 Chuck married the love of his life, Lois Holler.  After his military service, he returned to International Falls and joined his father Ole in the house moving and logging business.  After Ole retired, his son Charlie partnered with him. He worked long days in the woods of northern Minnesota.  In the summer months, his wife and children joined him at “camp”, spending months on the lakes and in the wilderness.  Chuck was a man of action.  He was a mechanic and a builder.  He had the ability to do anything that needed doing.  He built his first family home in Carson Lupie (South International Falls) and later a lake home on Rainy Lake.  Chuck retired from the woods in the 1980s and he and Lois moved to sunny Arizona.  Chuck and Lois began building houses: she drew up the plans and he built them.  They built over a dozen homes in the Foothills, first by themselves, and later with their sons Charlie and Terry, an architect. They loved retirement: square dancing, VW buggy rides in the desert, happy hours on the outside patio, walks at sunrise, RV trips to Showlow and San Diego, and time with their family.  Chuck also had a special relationship with dogs.  If your pup was near him, he would sneak something under the table, and the two of them would become fast friends.  For the past ten years, he had a standing Sunday walking date with his daughter Cathy and son Terry, where they visited and drank Bloody Mary’s. Chuck is preceded in death by his wife Lois, his parents Ole and Ann Thompson, his son Charlie, and his brother Clyde.  He is survived by his daughter Cathy (Bob) Brekke, son Terry (Martina) Thompson, both of Yuma, sister Donna (Pete) Biondich of International Falls, his grandchildren Chris Thompson of Yuma, Bobbi Brekke (Dave Nevarez) of Austin, TX, Stephanie Brekke of Yuma, Cindy (Mike) Thompson, and Cheryl Thompson, both of Portland, OR, and his great grandchildren Kate Brekke of Bemidji, MN, Joseph Abbott of Fountain, CO, Jakob and Grace Abbott of Yuma, and Charlotte Thompson of Portland, OR.
