Nancy was born in International Falls, Minnesota to Bert and Charlotte Thureson. She attended school at Littlefork then went on to Bemidji State College majoring in languages – German and Spanish. She moved to Appleton, Wisconsin in 1972 and began teaching these languages at Appleton West High School and later, towards the end of her 32 year career in the school system, at Madison Middle School. During this time she obtained her Master’s in Education at night from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. One year she was named Appleton’s teacher of the year.
In 1978 she married Tom Hennessy, whom she met in the Sly Fox Ski Club in Appleton, and together they had two boys Daniel Henry and Michael Patrick, who are now up and out and on their own both with successful careers.
Nancy enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities such as skiing, boating, fishing and gardening. She was active in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts program where Michael got his Eagle Scout award. She was an avid theater goer and got season tickets every year for the various plays, musicals and other performances at the Appleton PAC. She loved to travel and set up Appleton West’s German exchange program, and traveled with her family to many places in Europe, Caribbean, Mexico, Russia and to most of the states in the US.
She has two sisters remaining, Carol and Mary, who live in Minnesota with their families. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Donations to the Alzheimer’s program in her name would be very appropriate and appreciated.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and they can be secure knowing that Nancy is once again strong and healthy and is in a much better place.
