Scott Halle of Grand Forks, N.D., holds one of the many lake trout he and his group caught while fishing in the Nestor Falls area. A white tube jig was the preferred lure used to catch most of the fish, ranging from 5 to 12 pounds, reports M.T. Stringer. Lake trout or gray trout, more commonly known as Mackinaw, are easily caught January through May and this is a great time of year to easily access the remote, seldom fished Canadian shield waters. Mackinaw spawn in the fall, and fishing for them is closed for a couple months. After spawning, they spend a lot of time feeding and become very active throughout the water column which is the area from the bottom of the ice to the lake bottom. The expedition was led by The Fishmeister Dave Peterson. CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS
