Samantha Lee Hervey was born October 13, 1996, in International Falls, MN, to parents Leroy Eugene Hervey and Florence Helene Hervey. This began a short life of searching for truth, understanding, and spirituality, a quest whose answers always seemed to be just out of Sam’s reach.
Sam grew up in rural Koochiching County, surrounded by nature, and pets. Sam’s small school was very sensitive to Sam’s thirst for knowledge and was open minded in formulating her education. Sam participated in the National Youth Legislative Congress in Washington DC, studied Finnish at the Concordia Language Village, and spent two summers studying Japanese at the Concordia Language Village. Sam graduated as
Valedictorian of the Indus High School, and at the same time graduated as an Honor Student from Rainy River Community College in 2015. Sam then continued her education at the University of Minnesota in Biochemistry. During Sam’s time at the University, Sam encountered two major life events. Sam transferred to the male gender, and became Samuel LeRoy Hervey. This was followed on February 29, 2020, with Samuel’s marriage to Usama Hussain, a Pakistani student in chemical engineering.
Sam and Usama’s education was interrupted in March 2020, by the Covid 19 Pandemic. Sam and Usama moved to International Falls, until Usama returned to the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2020, and, Sam continued his journey alone.
Sam, during his subsequent travels, passed away on November 7, 2021 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Albert Einstein has said, “The search for truth is more precious that its possession.” Sam may have never found the answers he was looking for, but, “Sam, your life was precious, and you will not be forgotten.”
Preceding Sam in death were grandparents, Colin and Helene Chisholm, grandfather Walter Hervey, brother Mike Hervey, and brother George Lancelot Dilworth (Andrea).
Surviving Sam is spouse Usama Hussain, parents LeRoy and Florence Hervey, sisters Christianne Dilworth Johnson, Andrea Dilworth Northenscold (Paul), and Leanne Hervey Carpenters (Tom). Also surviving are nephews Cullen Johnson, Barrett Johnson, George Dilworth, and Thomas Carpenter, and nieces Amanda and Michaela Carpenter.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Sam on June 24, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church, in Loman, Minnesota
